Frozen cocktails appeared in the early 1950s in the United States with the growing popularity of kitchen electric blenders. If you have never tried one before, then you should know that these are cocktails made from berries, fruits, vegetables and even herbs, adding an alcoholic drink and everything is mixed in a blender with crashed ice. The result is a substance similar in texture to melted snow.
What ingredients can you use for your frozen cocktails?
Frozen cocktail recipes are diverse and allow you to use a huge variety of ingredients, fruits and vegetables. Here are some of the most popular ones:
- Banana – A win-win combination is a banana with any rum, whiskey or liquor. Below you will find a recipe for the famous Tequila Sunrise and Screwdriver.
- Oranges – The first thing that comes to mind is vodka or rum.
- Apples are another great fruit to use for your frozen cocktails as they are both sweet and acidic. A win-win option, of course, is vodka. Apples are a great combination with Vanilla vodka and if you like cinnamon flavor, add it for an additional depth.
- Peaches – they are delicious, fragrant and you can try the famous Bellini in a frozen version!
- Watermelon combines perfectly with vodka, tequila or rum. You can also make white wine cocktails. For best results, choose semi-dry or semi-sweet wine.
- Of course, strawberries, raspberries, mango, pineapple, melon, lime, lemons, coconut water – all of these can be used for your summer cocktails.
As far as alcoholic drinks that are suitable for preparing frozen cocktail recipes, there is no limit. You can use vodka, pina colada, rum, gin, prosecco, cognac, tequila, etc.
Tips and tricks to make the perfect frozen cocktail
If you have already tried to make frozen cocktails at home and the result was not what you expected, there is a good chance that you did not know some of the tricks. Here are some of the most important secrets that you need to know:
Use a powerful blender. You need a powerful blender that can easily turn ice into a fine slush. There is nothing worse than having huge pieces of ice in the drink. Use a blender with a glass bowl. It is unlikely that pieces of ice will break a plastic bowl, but a glass one is still better.
Use crushed ice, not cubes. It is easier to achieve a uniform consistency with crashed ice. Making crashed ice is quite simple: take your cubes, wrap them in a towel and start beating them with a rolling pin or any other heavy object. Take care of your fingers only.
Prepare the fruits. When preparing fruits for grinding in a blender, do not forget to peel and de-seed them. Then cut the fruits into more or less small pieces. You can use frozen fruits as well. You can buy packaged frozen fruit in your grocery store or freeze fruit cubes at home. The result will be a thicker cocktail with better consistency.
Do not overmix your frozen cocktails. One of the most common mistakes when making a frozen cocktail is to mix them for too long. This can result in a drink that is too thin or too liquid. That perfect mushy consistency of a slushy should be your ultimate goal.
Start at a low mixing speed. High speed is another common mistake which is due to your impatience. In addition, high speed can damage or even destroy your blender knives. Begin with a few pulses just to break up the ingredients. Start with a low speed and gradually increase it until you reach the highest level. A little patience helps to create the perfect slush ice cocktail.
Do not forget that frozen cocktails should be drunk slowly. It’s all about taste and pleasure!
