If it's set at any degree above 120 °F you are wasting energy, and money, as this is the highest optimal temperature that you need for hot water. Use Only LED Lights This tip is absolutely mandatory if by any chance you still haven't changed your light bulbs to LED ones. Unlike any other bulbs such as the old CFL, the LED ones use up to 90% of the energy they produce, which is incredibly efficient. When Halloween and Christmas come, and you start shopping for decorations, make sure that if you're getting any lighting it's LED, as well! Switch Off the Appliances that You Don't Use This is a practice that you will have to be consistent about in order to build up a habit and not have to think about doing it on a day-to-day basis. Use Curtains for Insulation I understand that not everyone is a fan of the drapes, HOWEVER, when it comes to energy-saving hacks this one works surprisingly well! First, make sure that you're allowing as much natural light to come into your home during the day as possible. Then, when the Sun moves or sets, close the curtains shut as tightly as possible. The thicker the curtains - the better. The reason why you should do that is because they act as insulation and will help preserve the heat in the room. You can also look into specific thermal curtains, which have an additional insulation layer, as well as padding, which stop the air from circulating from the window.
