Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV was introduced for the first time as a civilian version back in 1979. It was in the early 1970’s that the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was a significant Mercedes share holder, suggested to executives of Mercedes-Benz that they could design and manufactured a four wheel drive which could be used by both military and civilian customers. The idea was really good and Mercedes joined efforts with the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch keeping the design and development of the vehicle to themselves and trusting the manufacture to the Austrians.

For all this time it was released in three main generations – W460, W461 and W463. Throughout its history, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has received a variety of names and the most popular ones are G-class and G-wagen, short for Gelendvagen which means “cross country vehicle”. The wagon is called “Puch G” in Austria, Switzerland and Eastern European markets after the name of Steyr-Daimler-Puch company that did the final assembly.

The first 1979 G-Wagen 460 models appeared with a range of engine options:

  • 230G was powered by an in-line four cylinder gasoline engine providing either 90hp or 102hp;
  • 240GD had a four cylinder diesel producing 72hp;
  • 300GD was equipped with a five cylinder 80hp diesel engine.

In the 1981 the SUV was refined and the vehicle received four speed automatic transmission and air conditioning, later front seats were improved and 280GE model was introduced which was fitted with a six cylinder fuel injected gasoline engine producing the impressive 150hp. Additional improvements took place and by 1987 electric windows, a power antenna and luggage covers were added. To mark the tenth anniversary of the G-wagon, it received permanent four-wheel drive, a wood-trimmed interior and optional Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). One of the most famous G-class vehicles of all times is the Papa-G or Popemobile.

In 1991 Mercedes-Benz replaced Series 460 model range with Series 461 range. It had three wheelbase lengths, 354-horsepower V8 that was upgraded to 476 horsepower in 2004.
