The term “SPA” comes from “Sanus Per Aquam”, which means “health by or through water”. Nowadays the word spa is used to describe various health-improving procedures using sea, fresh or mineral water, using algae, mud, salts, plants, as well as massage, wrapping, peeling, masks, as well as aromatherapy, wine therapy, etc. These procedures are not only and not so much aimed at body care but at relaxing the mind and body from stress and anxiety. This is the reason why in good SPA studios so much attention is paid to the atmosphere – a cozy clean room, pleasant aromas, soft light and relaxing music. If you haven’t got the time to go to a studio for such procedures you can have a wonderful and relaxing day at home!

When you want to have a spa day at home, the first step is to create a relaxed and calm atmosphere. Make sure that nothing and no one interfere with your time for rest. You can create a pleasant atmosphere at home to suit your personal taste. Some prefer dim lights, some like candles and certain music – from romantic tunes to the sounds of nature – everyone has its individual taste. It is a good idea to prepare everything for the right surroundings in advance. Send your partner and children for a long walk or to the cinema and make sure you are not be distracted by anything. Turn off the phone and do not turn on the TV. Think about food, a spa day can be combined with a light detox, for which freshly squeezed juices, vegetable salads and seafood are good.
Choose relaxing music and scents. Traditionally, it is the “sounds of nature” – water sounds birdsong and similar melodies with a meditative effect. The scent is essential for the SPA atmosphere so you need to carefully choose scented candles and bath perfumes. The great advantage of having a spa day at home is that you can choose as per your taste. What is the aroma that you like best? Floral, fruity, marine, oriental or maybe soothing aromas like lavender, mint, lemon balm? You are free to choose aromas and cosmetics to your taste and mood!
Plan your SPA procedures. It can be a warm relaxing bath – foamy, with oils, with algae, depending on the mood. Before that you can take care of your hair and body – use a body scrub to rid the skin of old cells and at the same time make a light lymphatic drainage massage. Then rinse the scrub under the shower. Apply hair mask, take care of your face and hands’ skin, etc.
Rest! Once you complete the cosmetic procedures, do not rush to immediately return to your usual rhythm. Otherwise, the pleasure of spa care will immediately evaporate. Allow yourself to be a little lazy. Lie on the couch with a book, listen to music and just relax.
What procedures to choose for your relaxing day in the home SPA?
Scrubbing is one of the most popular and beneficial SPA procedures. It moisturizes, tones or nourishes the skin – it all depends on the selected components for the scrub. Home-made scrubs can be based on any vegetable oil, for example, olive or linseed oil, and substances with an exfoliating effect – salt, sugar, coffee, ground oatmeal or nuts. The most versatile home scrub is coffee grounds – it gently cleanses the skin and gives it a light shade of tan. It is ideal for combating cellulite, but for this you will have to use coffee grounds regularly – once every two days.
Another home scrub recipe is based on sea salt – half a cup can be mixed with honey, olive oil or the crushed peel of any citrus fruit. Rub the resulting mixture into the skin for several minutes with gentle massage movements. After the procedure, rinse the scrub in the shower.
Foot scrub – The composition of the salt scrub includes minerals and trace elements that will improve the functioning of the lymphatic system and will be an excellent prevention of edema. To make it, mix half a glass of sea salt with two tablespoons of olive oil.
A DIY Sugar scrub is great for your hands. If the skin of the hands is constantly drying, and the usual cream does not help, try a sugar scrub. The recipe is simple: mix sugar with grape seed oil and massage your hands properly.
Facial scrub with oatmeal and nuts is another great procedure. Mix flakes and nuts in equal parts and chop them in a blender. If you want to combine the cleansing procedure with nutrition, after peeling, leave the product on the skin for 10-15 minutes.
Have a relaxing bath. Many women like to take a bath, but it is most pleasant to relax in the warm water for pleasure and as much as you want. Do not deny yourself this, but if you plan to stay in the bathroom for more than 15-20 minutes, do not make the water too hot, otherwise you may fell dizzy. You can add 3-4. tablespoons of sea salt to the bathtub, pour 1 liter of milk which is especially good for dry skin or add a drop of your favorite essential oil. You can also prepare an herbal bath with chamomile, mint or linden flowers.
Use vegetable and essential oils and herbs for your SPA procedures at home
Vegetable oils are used for massage and for the preparation of homemade masks. Which oil to choose – olive, almond, coconut, avocado or shea, for example, you can decide for yourself. Each one has its own beneficial properties. You can easily find dried herbs in a pharmacy. They are cheap, but the possibilities for their use are extremely diverse. Here are some mask recipes:
Oil mask for feet
Mix half an avocado, 1 egg yolk, the juice of half a lemon and 4 tablespoons of linseed oil in a blender. Apply the mask to the feet after the foot bath and peeling and put on cotton socks. After 30 minutes, rinse with warm water.
Oil bath for hands
Heat the oil to a temperature of 39-40 C and put your hands in it for 10-15 minutes. Pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess oil.
If you want to use herbs for your relaxing bath, you can use cotton bags and fill them with dried herbal mixture from linden flowers, St. John’s wort, chamomile, mint leaves, etc.
For the face, prepare a vitamin mask based on vitamin E. You can buy capsules of this vitamin in a pharmacy. You need 3 capsules of vitamin E, a teaspoon of lemon juice, a little honey and 2 teaspoons of plain yogurt. Mix all the ingredients and apply on the skin of the face and neck with massage movements. After 15 minutes, the mask can be removed from the skin with a napkin or cotton pad.
