Homemade Lip Scrub with Manuka Honey
This first recipe I’m about to share with you is my absolute go-to for the summer. I’ve found this lip scrub to be incredibly effective in reducing inflammation and redness. It’s also incredibly moisturizing and has antibacterial properties which help protect your lips from pollution and free radicals. Here’s how to make your own:
Ingredients:
- a cup or a bowl
- lemon squeezer
- 2 tbsp crushed sugar
- 1 tbsp Manuka honey
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions:
- Take a cup or a bowl and squeeze the juice of 1 lemon in it. A regular-sized lemon contains approximately 3 tbsp of juice, so you’re only going to need 1/3 of it.
- Add the crushed sugar and mix.
- After that add the honey and mix until you get a homogenous concoction.
- Take some of the scrub with your fingers and rub it gently onto your lips.
- Let it sit for 3–5 minutes.
- Rinse off with warm water.
Vegan Lip Scrub for Pink Lips
As you probably already know honey isn’t vegan. Not only that, but many people are allergic to it, too. Don’t worry, you don’t need to say goodbye to your flawless pink lips! In vegan recipes instead of honey, we often use agave, which is a great alternative! Here’s how to make a super easy and effective vegan lip scrub:
Ingredients:
- a cup/bowl/jar
- 1 tbsp agave
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp beet sugar
- essential oil of choice or vanilla extract for taste (not mandatory)
Instructions:
- Take the cup and add first the coconut oil and agave syrup.
- As you’re stirring slowly, add the beet sugar to the mixture. For a thicker consistency, simply add more sugar.
- Finally, add the essential oil of choice or vanilla extract.
- Take a small amount with your finger and rub gently onto your lips.
- Let it sit for 10 minutes then rinse with warm water.
- For best results apply 3 times a week.
Fruity Homemade Lip Scrub
Unfortunately, sometimes the cracked lips stay long after the summer is gone! This particular lip scrub recipe is one I swear by for the colder months. The secret ingredient? Kiwi! It reduces inflammation, protects against free radicals, and is packed with vitamin E, which helps lock in moisture. This is how you make it:
Ingredients:
- a bowl
- half a kiwi
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
Instructions:
- First, mash the kiwi into the bowl.
- Add the coconut oil and stir thoroughly.
- As you’re stirring, slowly add the brown sugar.
- Once you have a homogenous mixture, scoop a small amount with your fingers and rub it into your lips.
- Let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then rinse with normal water.
Note: If your lips are really dry and there’s a lot of dead skin, you can rub the scrub onto your lips with a toothbrush. This will have an exfoliating effect and leave your lips feeling super soft! For best results, use the lip scrub 2 times a day.
Can Lip Scrub Remove Dark Lips?
Your lips are getting darker in the summer? Don’t worry – you’re not the only one! This occurrence is far more common than you may think. It’s also easily reversible! The dark tint on your lips can be removed with a lip scrub with just a few applications. Here’s a simple DIY recipe you can try out:
Ingredients:
- a cup
- 1 tbsp cinnamon powder
- 1 1/1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 15 ml lemon juice
Instructions:
- Add the cinnamon powder and sugar to the cup.
- Slowly pour the olive oil and mix the ingredients together as you’re doing so.
- Finally, add the lemon juice and stir again until you get a homogenous concoction.
- Take a little bit of the scrub and rub it onto your lips thoroughly.
- Let it sit for 15–20 minutes.
- Once the time is up, rinse off with cold water and apply moisturizing lip balm or Vaseline.
What Causes Dark Lips?
There are many reasons as to why your lips are getting a dark tint. During the summer the most common one is excessive sun exposure. That’s why it’s important to use a lip balm with SPF protection. Other common reasons are:
- environmental pollution
- cigarette smoking
- hormonal disbalance
- vitamin deficiency
