Low maintenance small garden design – ideas for patio design
A low maintenance small garden is for many people who have limited outdoor space, an opportunity for creative patio design. We present a small backyard in San Francisco, called Dolores Park, which was thoroughly renovated in 2 weeks. It used to be so tight that a large amount of ground had to be removed for its renovation.
Landscape architect Richard McPherson admits that his low maintenance small garden design was really a challenge. Thanks to the terraced design McPherson was able to create an outdoor area on several levels and to use effectively the available space. Concrete retaining walls were built to stabilize the artificially built hill. The gray concrete was colored to harmonize with the environment and to minimize optically its size.
Prerequisite for lush greenery of the patio is the selection of plants that are suitable for the existing site and the individual care of the owner. This low-maintenance small garden design of McPherson was planted with sub-tropical plants such as giant Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise), Philodendron, mini palm trees. McPherson opted for spectacular background plants with a variety of textures and shades of green color – Campanula, Lantana, Bacopa, azalea in full bloom, white star jasmine is an accent on the concrete wall.
Homeowners San Tran and Dennis Durzinsky love the conversations and relaxation. The large windows of the house also offer a wonderful view to the garden. The low maintenance design features a barbecue, a concrete fountain, which contrasts with the lush vegetation, and a small lounge area. Blue stone steps lead to the upper level where two comfortable sun beds were placed in the sun. Partitions guarantee the best relaxation. A few discreet lamps mark the palms and fragrant star jasmine, red hydrangea, vines and bamboo.
Thanks to innovative and clever landscaping San and Dennis enjoy a tropical retreat, a world that removes the busy city center. Like San says: “Our low-maintenance small garden pleases us every day and we are very proud with this mini oasis.
