By definition a credenza is a long low side cupboard, a buffet or a bookcase with a flat top, usually with file drawers and legs. The origin of the name of this furniture piece comes from the Italian word “credentia”,which means “trust” and is associated with the practice of placing food and beverages on a sideboard to be tasted by a servant in order to make sure that none of these contained poison. Since that time the function of credenzas has changed significantly and they have become a valuable and functional furniture piece in contemporary homes and offices. Credenzas are usually made of wood, but contemporary credenza cabinets feature brass, leather or other materials for a more contemporary look.

In residential homes credenza cabinets are often used as a media cabinet. Due to the comparatively low height and long flat surface TV credenzas are a popular furniture piece. In the dining room credenzas are used as side buffets, which reminds of its original purpose. Bedroom credenzas, sometimes combined with storage drawers, are very convenient for storage of various possessions. Credenzas are also extremely popular for hallways or corridors as they are relatively small and a perfect example of space saving furniture. Finally, modern credenza cabinets find their place if offices. Office credenzas provide an additional working space or space for storing files.
