Using pallets, for example, is becoming increasingly popular. That’s why in today’s article we’ll see how to make a pallet bed and save money while creating a cozy atmosphere in our bedroom!
What are the Advantages of a Pallet Bed?
Although still considered an unusual way to furnish, incorporating pallets into your interior will add a lot of comfort and charm. Also, natural materials are very popular at the moment. Let’s see what are the other benefits of pallets and why it is worth using them to make your bed:
- Wooden pallets are originally made to withstand heavy loads, making them extremely durable while not weighing much. They are easy to work with and are made entirely of natural wood and nails.
- They look original and modern, and they are also in tune with the minimalist style that is currently trending.
- What is more, wooden pallets are widely available, and you can easily find them, plus you won’t spend a large amount of money on them, which means it won’t significantly affect the family budget.
- With pallets, you will be able to build a sturdy and stable structure suitable for your needs – single, double bed, and even a bunk bed.
- Pallets offer you creative freedom, as you can varnish or paint them, apply different decorating techniques, and if you don’t like the end result, you can simply replace the pallet with a new one or sand the part you don’t like.
How to Choose Pallets for Bed?
The first and most important thing to do before buying pallets is to ask what goods have been transported or stored on them. Make sure they are not ones that contain toxic substances because wood absorbs them, and as a result they will be released into the air when it is significantly warm or humidity levels increase.
It is also worth paying attention to the quality of the wood and how long the pallets have been used. Inspect for moss, rotten areas, stains and cracks which may be an indicator of subsequent problems. In addition, check for the presence of unpleasant odors, as well as for letters in the form of a code at the ends from which the method of disinfection can be traced.

- Proceed to sanding – carefully and thoroughly go through all areas. Then clean again with a damp cloth and allow to dry.
- Impregnate the wood with protective agents.
- Varnish or paint the pallets according to your preference.
How to Make a Bed from Pallets?
The first step is to draw up a plan for the bed. It is important to determine the exact dimensions of the furniture to know how many pallets will be needed for its construction.
- For this tutorial, we use pallets of European type of standard size 800 x 1200 mm (31.50” x 47.24”).
- Once the pallets are chosen and the plan ready, we start cutting and sanding the wood.
- With the help of the sander, we rework the visual aspect of the wood in order to smooth it and make it more pleasant to the touch. Thus, we benefit from a more new aspect.
- Regarding the cutting plan, we recommend you to opt for a simpler configuration. In the ideal case, the least amount of work is done by making a single layer of bed base. For this purpose, lay the pallets on the floor and make the necessary cuts with the saw. Normally, the pallets can be arranged in a square or T shape.
- Then, link the elements together with steel adaptor brackets.
- Finally, it is best to cover the pallet construction with a strong felt or fabric cover. This will protect the mattress. To keep the cover in place, the fabric is fixed with an upholstery stapler.
