Naturally dyed eggs – how to do it with simple ingredients
Dyeing the shells in bright colors with the kits from a supermarket is the most popular way to decorate our Easter eggs but there is a more natural approach to do that. A lot of people have never used natural dyes and the number of people who imagine some horrible concoctions is quite large. The truth is that naturally dyed eggs are very easy to make and also quite effortless.
If you have decided to take the eco-friendly and safe approach and use different ingredients this year we shall help you with some useful information for naturally dyed eggs. What you are going to need are a few stainless steel or enamel saucepans, vinegar, white eggs (preferable because they take on the dyes much better and easier than brown ones), egg cartons for drying. As far as ingredients are concerned – look in your pantry, peel some onions as the skins shall be used to dye the shells. Further – frozen blueberries, red cabbage, paprika, turmeric, chamomile or green tea.
Blueberries shall give you a wonderful blue color. Mix one cup of fruit with 1 cup of water. Boil them for a few minutes, then remove the blueberries. Red cabbage mixed with boiling water will give a different blue shade. Simmer onion skins in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes for orange. Two grated carrots boiled in 2 cups of water for about 15 minutes will give you the yellow color. For green – use 1/2 bunch of chopped parsley and spinach. You need to know that blueberries create very dark colors, while beets are more subtle. Eggs can be left in their dyes for a few minutes to overnight. Do not be afraid to experiment and we are sure you will have gorgeous naturally painted eggs.
