Japanese Spicy Tuna Rice Bowl – This Delicious Traditional Dish is a Feast for the Senses!

If you’ve ever been to a traditional Japanese restaurant you’ve probably seen on the menu something called a “spicy tuna donburi”. This is a staple dish in Western Japan and is one of the easiest and most delicious rice bowl recipes I’ve ever cooked at home! Take a quick trip to the Land of the Rising Sun with this simple spicy tuna rice bowl meal for two!

This traditional Japanese dish is not only super easy to make but also incredibly affordable! For just under $3.80 per portion using 12 simple ingredients you can have a beautiful, healthy, and nutritious plate that’s a guaranteed crowd favorite! Here’s what you’re going to need for preparing this spicy tuna rice bowl:

Ingredients

  • 100 grams of basmati rice
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 ginger
  • 1/2 chili pepper
  • 2 strands parsley
  • 1 onion
  • 25 grams of butter
  • 2 slices of white tuna
  • tomato purée
  • 1 lime
  • 75 ml white wine
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

For the tuna:

  1. Slice the tuna into small pieces.
  2. Put the tomato purée into a bowl.
  3. Peel and grate the ginger.
  4. Wash the chili, remove the seeds, and dice it.
  5. Add the ginger and the chili to the bowl with the tomato purée and mix together.
  6. Wash one lemon, cut it in half, and squeeze it into a small cup.
  7. Take a saucepan and put it on the stove at low-height heat.
  8. Add butter to the pan and let it melt.
  9. Peel and dice the onion and garlic.
  10. Sweat them in the pan for 5 minutes.
  11. Add the tomato paste mixture to the pan.
  12. Mix and cook for 2 more minutes.
  13. Add the tuna slices, lemon juice, and white wine to the pan.
  14. Pour 10 ml of water into the pan and mix everything together.
  15. Cook covered for 25 minutes on low heat.

For the rice:

  1. Pour 1 cup of water into a saucepan.
  2. Add salt to the water and then put it on the stove at medium-height heat.
  3. When the water boils, add the rice.
  4. Cook the rice uncovered for 10 minutes.
  5. Drain the cooked rice and put it aside.

Plating

  • Add the rice to a bowl.
  • Arrange the slices of tuna on top.
  • Pour the sauce onto the tuna.
  • Cut the remaining lemon into slices.
  • Add the lemon slices on top of the sauce.
  • Sprinkle with chopped parsley and sesame seeds.
