Restaining cabinets is one of the easiest ways to remodel your kitchen. The cabinets occupy much space in the kitchen and changing them will change the whole look of the room.
Restaining cabinets by ourselves is a fun project
Kitchen cabinets, as a rule, are made of natural materials and we can easily give them the look we want. Restaining cabinets can be done in a weekend and will cost you significantly less than buying new ones. You will need the following materials to complete the task:
- A wood finish in the preferred color
- Screwdriver
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- Hot water
- Cloth
- Bucket
- Plastic sheeting
- Paint stripper
- Paintbrush
- Putty knife
- Sandpaper
- Oil-based wood stain
Restaining cabinets – step by step instructions
Remove the doors from their hinges and unscrew all attached equipment. Take them to another room and make sure the area is well ventilated. Combine cleaner in a bucket with warm water. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection glasses. Wash the cabinets to remove dust, dirt and grease and leave them to dry.
Apply paint stripper to a small section of the wood with a paintbrush to remove any finish which is previously applied and after it bubbles strip it with a sharp tool or a putty knife.
After all the finish is removed, wipe the doors, cabinets and drawer fronts with a damp cloth. Let dry completely and sand with sandpaper to remove any scratches or gouges. Wipe the dust doors and interior when finished.
Apply one coat of paint on the cabinets with smooth, even strokes. Allow the coating to dry before applying the second and final layer.
